MSEM CURRICULUM: OVERVIEW
Curriculum designed to prepare
engineering and technical leaders.
Tufts Gordon Institute’s M.S. in Engineering Management
is a fully accredited degree program that
consists of a defined sequence of classroom sessions (Classroom
Learning) combined with real-world project-based
activities (Experienced-Based
Learning). The classroom sessions are
interactive, intense and intimate, and provide you with
the broad base of knowledge you need to manage within a
functional area as well as across functional lines.
Project activities give you valuable experience in
leading teams and working with others on issues of
relevance to technology-based organizations. Moreover,
the real-world focus of our curriculum allows you to
immediately apply what you learn to your job.
Tufts Gordon Institute requires each student to complete
the following 10- credit degree program (10 credits are
equivalent to 40 semester hours of study). Please note
that Tufts University uses a 1-credit per course system.
Classroom Learning:
A Modular Approach
Unlike most graduate programs, students in the
M.S. in Engineering Management degree program at
Tufts Gordon Institute do not complete an entire
course over a single semester. In our program,
the content of each of the six core courses is
broken down into a series of integrated modules.
At any given time, you will study several
modules from several different courses
simultaneously. This format is designed to let
you gain exposure to important topics early in
your studies, and build upon what you have
learned as you move through the program. The
number of classroom hours dedicated to each
module varies, depending on the amount of time
required to learn the specific material. This
format allows us to modify or update the
curriculum by improving the module contents,
adding or deleting a specific module, or
changing the number of sessions allotted to the
module. It also gives us the flexibility to hire
faculty members to teach the individual modules
based on their expertise in the particular
topic. |

Experienced-Based
Learning: There’s No Substitute for
Real-World Projects.
Experienced-based learning challenges you to
apply what you have learned in the classroom
to real-world problems, and requires you to
demonstrate your ability to be a technical
leader. The team practicum and the
individual leadership project are the two
elements of experience-based learning. |

Optional Courses Gordon Institute
students may take up to three courses from the
general Tufts University course catalog in
addition to the courses defined in the
Institute's curriculum. These electives are not
required to earn the Master's degree in
Engineering Management, but are an excellent way
for a student to further develop their knowledge
in a particular area of study. Students may take
the elective courses during any of the four academic
semesters they are enrolled at the Gordon Institute.
