Where were you in your career and what drove your decision to go back to school?

“While I was finishing up my bachelor’s degree, I was fairly sure I eventually wanted to attend graduate school. I also knew I wanted to get some work experience first. At my first job, I noticed that nearly all my managers had gotten master’s degrees. I knew this would be a differentiator, but I just wasn’t exactly sure what degree I wanted to pursue. Finally, after 4 years out of college, I applied. My company has been very supportive and really appreciates my commitment to furthering my education.”

Why did you choose to pursue a M.S. in Engineering Management at Tufts?

“Having gone to Tufts for my bachelor’s degree, I had actually been familiar with the Gordon Institute for a while. I took undergraduate courses offered by Gordon, while in college and always knew there was a chance I’d pursue an MSEM. I entered the workforce and spoke to many colleagues who had gotten a master’s in either engineering or business, but they all had questions as to the direct applicability of those programs to the work they were doing. When I started looking at Gordon seriously and took some of their Professional Education course, I was struck by the quality of instructors, applicability of the course material, and the inexpensive tuition compared with MBA programs. That combined with the fact that the program is designed for working professionals, and it was a no-brainer.”

How do you balance the demands of work/family/school?

“Google Calendar. It’s an unbelievable tool, and it practically runs my life. While I’m not married and don’t have children yet, my life is still extremely busy. I have separate calendars within Google, which cover my workout and running schedule, travel, work schedule, social activities, the Boston Celtics schedule, you name it. Then I have one just for Gordon, which includes all of my classes, and assignment due dates. It even adds important dates that it finds in my Gmail inbox. The calendar syncs up with my phone and tablet calendars and sends me alerts, so I always know where I have to be (in case I ever forget).”
