Faculty Profile: Pamela Stepp

How do you leverage your real-world experience in the classroom?

We are all works in progress. Since the world keeps changing we never get leadership exactly right. Sharing my personal leadership experiences of success and failure, as well as those of well-known leaders, helps my students understand that we are human beings who make mistakes. However, failure is just as important as success. Learning effective leadership requires learning how to be resilient.

What are your teaching goals; what are the learning outcomes students gain from your course?

The purpose of my leadership course is to assess and reflect upon the leadership skills of the students by providing an opportunity to gather feedback on their current strengths and developmental needs. The overarching goal is self-awareness. Experiential exercises and self-assessment tools are used to create understanding. Class members will be trained in giving and receiving feedback from team members. Activities in the course include leadership and team challenges, case discussions, and team presentations that demonstrate effective critical thinking skills. Creation of a personal leadership brand, future goals and a developmental plan will assist students in their leadership journey.

How would you describe your teaching style?

Since I ask students to write and present their personal leadership brand I share mine with them:
I want to be known for being a knowledgeable, inclusive, leadership educator who demonstrates her passion for the subject and genuinely cares about helping her students gain confidence and grow into the best leaders that they can be.

How does your class prepare students to succeed after graduating?

The final course assignment asks students to write a paper that lists their abilities, how they are perceived, where they want to be five years from now, and what are the standards for success in the job they have or hope to have. After this analysis they choose two SMART goals to work on to help them achieve success in their future organization of work.

What does entrepreneurship mean to you?

An entrepreneur is someone who identifies a need and fills it. This can be starting a business for profit or starting and raising money for a university debate team to help student’s practice critical thinking and argumentation skills, or making an organization global by bringing in international companies.
