Tufts Gordon Institute Faculty Deliver Custom Training Sessions with Local Companies

Over the past several months, faculty members from the Gordon Institute have delivered a series of custom programs and lunch and learn sessions at companies in and around the Boston area. Drawing from the Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) curriculum, the programs cover a range of topics including conflict resolution, systems thinking, leadership development and innovation.

The following faculty members delivered programs:

  • Jerry Brightman, Ph.D. – Lecturer

BAE Systems, Nashua, NH: With the support of Joshua Landry, MSEM ’13, Tufts Gordon Institute delivered a series of four sessions at BAE Systems, one by each of the above faculty members. These sessions, taught by faculty members Mary Viola, Sam Liggero, Mark Bamford and Jerry Brightman, covered a broad range of topics from the MSEM curriculum, including conflict resolution, systems thinking, leadership development and innovation.

Cimpress, Waltham, MA: On October 21, Mary Viola, Ph.D., delivered the session “Discovering the Leader within You” to employees at Cimpress, a mass customization and web-to-print services company. Arranged by Aika Syrgakkyzy, MSEM ’17, a member of the company’s Women in Technology group, the interactive session was attended by over 35 employees, Mary discussed the differences between leadership and management; how personalities shape leadership styles; and how people can take steps to become the leaders they aspire to be.

DePuy Synthes, Raynham, MA: On February 9th Mary Viola, PhD., will present another lunch and learn session, “Influencing without Authority” for the Young Professionals employee group at DePuy Synthes, a Johnson and Johnson Company. In this session, coordinated by John Hamnett, MSEM ’16, and chair of the Young Professionals group at DePuy, Mary will discuss how professionals achieve impact across an organization by learning to influence others even when they are not in a position of power.

Vention Medical, Salem, NH: Mary Viola, Ph.D., Professor of the Practice, delivered a custom, two-day training course focused on developing leadership and teamwork for Vention Medical. The group included 15 members of the extended, cross-functional leadership team from the company’s Salem location.
