Director of Tufts Gordon Institute Rob Hannemann opened the evening by congratulating each of the students on their accomplishment and encouraged them to chose and follow a passion that is sustainable and provides value to the world.

Following Hanneman’s remarks, Professor of the Practice Mary Viola and Engineering Management Program Director reflected back on the student’s first semester experience when they are required to give inspirational speeches and compared these to the polished presentations and speeches they able to give now with conviction and confidence.

“What I have observed is a transformation. The mental models of an engineering leader you brought into the program when you entered two years ago have completely evolved. You have the skills and the knowledge and now it’s your decision to decide to lead. The world needs you. And I encourage you to not forget what you’ve learned.”

In her closing remarks Viola read a quote by Steve Jobs from his commencement speech at Stanford after first battle with cancer in June 2005. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And, most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Professor of the Practice Charlie Rabie presented the MSEM Distinguished Student Awards to recognize individuals’ academic performance and leadership qualities. The award recipients included:

Tiffany Poon, Project Coordinator at the Broad Institute
Muhammad Shloul, Maintenance Facilitator, AstraZeneca

Professor of the Practice Sam Liggero then presented the MSEM Outstanding Student Award to recipient Jennifer Sloan, Quality Assurance Manager at Pfizer. Jennifer earned the award by showing excellence in all aspects of the program — thought leadership in class assignments, in team projects and in her individual leadership project. Liggero mentioned that Jennifer really embodies the mission and values of Tufts Gordon Institute noting that Jennifer and her team at Pfizer are working on a drug that will change the lives of millions of people around the world. Jennifer concluded the night by graciously accepted the award and recognizing students’ significant others and families as well as the faculty and staff for their support.
