As late summer months transition to fall, Tufts Gordon Institute welcomed new and returning On-Campus MS in Engineering Management students, marking the beginning of the 2020-2021 academic year.
On Wednesday, Aug. 19, first-year MSEM students joined faculty and staff virtually for an orientation that covered class policies, course logistics, and new protocols in place for this fall. With health and safety as a top priority, the On-Campus MSEM program will leverage a hybrid model of learning while following guidelines Tufts University has set in place.
Mary Viola, PhD – Director of Engineering Management programs and Professor of the Practice – commented on TGI’s unwavering commitment to providing a transformative experience that prepares students to become leaders across the world. In the first year, students will take courses touching on Finance and Accounting, New Product Development, and more. As Kevin Oye – Executive Director of Tufts Gordon Institute, Director of the MS in Innovation and Management program and Professor of the Practice – noted, the lessons they learn will prepare them to tackle any challenge they face, especially in today’s unprecedented landscape.
For Thursday evening’s welcome to MSEM students returning for their second year, faculty – from each course students will complete this semester – shared remarks on what’s in store for the cohorts. Partha Ghosh, Professor of the Practice, said, “the second year is about embracing the unknown.” Many of the students completed an Industry Consulting Project over the summer where student teams were introduced to a client organization – often outside their area of expertise – with a real-world problem or opportunity. Over 12 weeks, students worked to research, develop strategies, and make recommendations to address the project requirements.
As courses meet for the first time beginning this weekend, and into the coming weeks, we’re excited to see all that the students accomplish in and out of the classroom.
