Engineering Management Program Director Mary Viola, PhD, Retires

Tufts Gordon Institute reflects on Director of Engineering Management Mary Viola’s accomplished tenure ahead of her retirement culminating 20 years of teaching and service.

After 20 years of teaching at Tufts Gordon Institute and service as the Director of Engineering Management, Mary Viola, PhD, will retire on Aug. 1, 2021.

During her accomplished tenure, Mary oversaw the development and deployment of the Engineering Management program at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Over 1,000 alumni have graduated with MS in Engineering Management degrees, benefiting from a curriculum awarded the National Academy of Engineering’s Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education for “providing a holistic, meaningful, relevant learning experience for technology professionals who have the desire to be engineering leaders.”

Her guidance, support, and direction were also instrumental in developing the Engineering Management minor for undergraduate students.

Throughout the years, Mary has taught classes in transformative leadership at Tufts and Fortune 500 companies. Stepping back from her teaching duties, she will stay on as a part-time, adjunct faculty member to advise current MSEM students working on their Capstone Leadership Projects (CLP).

Engineering Management programs will continue as planned this fall. Sam Liggero, PhD, Academic Director of the Online MSEM and Professor of the Practice, will provide his unwavering academic leadership for our full MSEM community. Jennifer Braggin, Lecturer on Engineering Leadership, will oversee the Engineering Management minor.

The TGI community will miss Mary’s impactful teaching, wise counsel, mentorship, and outstanding leadership. Please join us in celebrating Mary’s accomplishments and cheering her on as she opens the next chapter of her life.
