Taking the leap to pursue a graduate degree abroad is a decision that comes with both excitement and uncertainty. Leaving Turkey to pursue the MS in Innovation & Management (MSIM) program at Tufts was a decision filled with excitement and a little fear. It was a bold step into the unknown—but one that has profoundly shaped my journey as a graduate student and my goals for how I want to impact the world.
The MSIM program has been full of opportunities for self-discovery: experiences that have truly made me pause and look inward. For the first time, I have seen sides of myself I hadn’t fully acknowledged—a creative spirit, an innovator, someone with ideas worth sharing. Since then, I’ve felt myself growing not just professionally but on a personal level, too. I’m finding my voice, learning that leadership is about listening and empowering others, and recognizing that my ideas have value. This experience has reshaped how I see myself and the world around me, expanding my understanding of who I can become and the impact I can have.
When you move to a new country, you wonder if you’ll feel like an outsider. But at Tufts Gordon Institute, I was welcomed with open arms. My classmates come from every corner of the world, each bringing a unique story and perspective. Our discussions are enriched by these diverse voices, and I’ve learned as much from my peers as from the curriculum. Working in diverse teams to build our business ideas and solve problems teaches me to appreciate new perspectives and bring a global view to my understanding. Together, we are navigating challenges, sharing victories, and supporting each other—like family. It’s a community that’s not just diverse but deeply connected.
Stepping into the world of presentations in a second language was both exhilarating and daunting. Each week, I faced the challenge of articulating my ideas in English, and it often felt like I was navigating uncharted waters. However, with the support of my professors and encouragement from my teammates, I slowly began to find my voice. The experience of presenting in a language that wasn’t my first forced me to refine my thoughts and communicate more clearly. I still remember the thrill of delivering a presentation that resonated with my audience—it was a moment of realization that I could overcome my fears and express myself authentically. That journey has not only built my confidence but also prepared me to embrace future challenges with an open heart and mind.
If you’re considering studying abroad, look for a place that feels like home—one where you can grow both in and out of the classroom. At Tufts, I’ve found that place. It’s a community that encourages me to reach beyond my limits, learn from failure, and connect deeply with people from all walks of life. For anyone about to take this leap, my advice is this: Find a place that doesn’t just teach you but transforms you.
