First MSTML Graduate Prepares to Make An Impact

Jim Stiegler, MSTML '24, shares how his MSTML degree is empowering him to take his next step as a leader.

The MS in Technology Management and Leadership (MSTML) degree is designed to meet the increasing demand for change makers who often have undergraduate degrees in computer science or mathematics or other non-engineering majors and aspire to move into management and leadership roles. Jim Stiegler, MSTML ‘24, came to Tufts Gordon Institute (TGI)  to become just that: a purpose-driven leader who built upon his technical background with new skills in business, analytics, and leadership. He will be our first MSTML graduate, completing his degree by the end of 2024. We sat down with Jim to learn more about why he chose to come to TGI for the MSTML and how he envisions his future after graduating.

Can you please tell us a bit about your background and why you chose to come back to school for a master’s degree?

Since earning my BS in Computer Science from Virginia Tech in 2008, I’ve worked with the US federal government. I had always thought about pursuing a graduate degree, but life kept getting in the way—until my wife’s job brought us to the Boston area. As I was wrapping up a role in Miami, I had the opportunity to apply for academic sponsorship through my organization. While I could have continued advancing in my career without a degree, I wanted a change of pace and the chance to learn new skills in areas I’m less familiar with. I believe continued learning is essential for both personal and professional growth. Hitting the “reset” button and returning to school has been a refreshing experience.

How did you discover the Tufts MSTML program? What made you choose the MSTML over another type of degree?

Knowing I’d be in the Boston area, I began researching graduate programs in engineering management, project management, MBAs, systems engineering, and a few related fields. To be honest, I initially thought I only wanted an in-person program and even started a different program at another school. However, after one semester, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I quickly shifted my focus back to Tufts and its range of engineering graduate programs, which had already caught my attention. I was particularly drawn to the flexibility of the MSTML program, with its online and hybrid options, and its comprehensive mix of engineering, technology management, business, and leadership courses. These areas not only aligned with my interests but are essential for success across many industries.

How has your experience with the MSTML program been now that you are nearing graduation?

The program has been applicable to my career goals as a future leader that is, and will be, influencing cross-functional teams and integrating emerging technologies to achieve organizational goals. I’ve enjoyed every course, learned a ton, and made some incredible connections with faculty and students. Even being almost entirely online, I have found the program to be intimate and personal. You see the same faces over the program but also meet new people. Connecting in person at on-campus weekend immersives has been incredibly rewarding and valuable as well.

The staff and faculty at TGI are exceptional! They're always willing to meet one-on-one, offering the resources and support needed for success, which was a major reason I chose the MSTML program. From the prompt response from admissions after my initial inquiry ,to my meeting with Sam Liggero, Director of the MSEM and MSTML programs, and the personalized one-on-ones with each faculty member, the MSTML program truly treats each student as an individual. This personal approach has greatly enhanced my experience in the program so far.

What courses have had the biggest impact on your growth as a leader?

I was challenged to reflect on my values and core beliefs in Practice of Ethical Leadership with Jane Seminara. Like many of the courses, we had engaging respectful dialogue that led to deep insights.

I learned a ton in Building Financial Intelligence with Frank Apeseche. It was a lot of work in a short span of time, but Frank’s teaching method and ability to break down the material in digestible formats made it interesting and gave me the confidence to tackle an area I had no experience in.

Developing a new product in Paul Klein’s New Product or Service course was challenging, but rewarding. I had an incredible team and, while I’m biased, I think we proposed a product that had a lot of market potential. However, I never want to discuss sunscreen applicators again! Also, shoutout to the other teams who also presented some novel innovative products. It was great seeing so much experience and breadth of knowledge coming together to develop new products and services.

Although I had no prior experience in supply chain management, Gerry Brown's Supply Chain and Operations Management course provided invaluable insights and opened my eyes to the critical role efficient supply chain operations play across industries. What I initially thought might be a dry subject, Gerry transformed into an engaging and highly rewarding learning experience.

Would you recommend this program to others? Why?

Definitely! I believe TGI's MSTML program equips future leaders with the comprehensive knowledge and skills needed to drive organizational success. Whether you're in an industry focused on innovation or integrating emerging technologies, the MSTML program offers valuable insights and expertise that will benefit both you and your organization.

From a work-life balance, I also think the MSTML program is well-suited for those looking for incredible flexibility. Whether that is taking your time or creating an expedited timeline to complete the program, or doing it completely remotely or via a hybrid model, I think the MSTML can provide anyone with the work-life balance they seek when trying to achieve their professional development goals.

Although I still need to complete my Capstone Leadership Project, I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful to have found TGI’s MSTML program. It has been intellectually challenging yet personally rewarding, equipping me with the tools and resources to lead future organizations in driving innovative technological solutions. The program has also provided me with a remarkable networking platform that I didn’t have before, connecting me with exceptional professionals from various industries who bring diverse experiences and knowledge.

Whatever the future holds, the MSTML program has enhanced my critical thinking, technical expertise, and leadership skills, positioning me for professional excellence.
