A Students Guide to Enjoying Boston Winters

10 activities to make the most of the winter season!

Written by Sophia DiCocco, MSIM ‘25

With plenty of cold weeks still ahead of us this winter, I figured I’d share some of my favorite Boston winter activities! Whether you’re a Tufts student looking for a fun outing or a potential student from a warmer climate wondering what you can look forward to in the cold, here are some of the best ways to enjoy Boston in the winter months. Hop on the T and head downtown for these must-try winter experiences:

Boston Frog Pong Ice Skating
  1. Ice Skating on the Frog Pond

Skating is one of my favorite winter activities, especially on the Frog Pond in Boston Common. Most Tuesday nights, from 6 - 9 PM, college students can get 50% off admission with a student ID. Skate rentals are $15, so if you have your own pair be sure to bring them and save some money! There are also lots of cafes around Boston Common to check out and grab some hot chocolate to warm up after skating!

Students at the MFA
  1. Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)

If you’d rather escape the cold, the Museum of Fine Arts is the perfect place to go, and admission is free with a Tufts ID! The current featured exhibit, “Power of the People: Art and Democracy,” explores how artists have represented democracy over time, featuring over 180 pieces from ancient Greece to today. Even beyond the featured exhibits, the MFA is a great place to take in art from all over the world.

  1. Catch a Bruins Game at TD Garden

If you’re a sports lover, Bruins games are a must. The energy throughout TD Garden is amazing, and whether you’re a huge hockey fan or just want to check out the Bruins, going to a game is a classic Boston experience. Grab a group of friends, put on some black and gold, and enjoy the game!

  1. Boston Theater Scene

Boston theater has something for everyone: Broadway shows, comedy acts, concerts, musicals, and more. The Boston Opera House, Emerson Colonial Theater, and Wang Theater are great places to start if you’re in the mood for a performance.

  1. Chinese New Year in Chinatown

Boston’s Chinese New Year Parade is a must-see event, featuring lion dances, drumming performances, and street celebrations. The 2025 parade will take place on February 9th from 10 AM to 3 PM, starting at Phillips Square on Harrison Avenue and Beach Street. Be sure to stop into one of Chinatown’s many amazing restaurants to grab some food and warm up!

  1. Celtics Games at TD Garden

If basketball is more your thing, be sure to catch a Boston Celtics game at TD Garden. Make sure to get your tickets early to save some money!

  1. Boston Wine and Food Festival

If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, the Boston Wine and Food Festival is a great winter event. Running from January 31st to March 27th, it features wine tastings, gourmet food pairings, and events where you can learn from top chefs and winemakers. Whether you’re a wine expert or want to try something new, be sure to check out the event lineup!
