Discover Anika Agarwal's (MSIM '24) ten favorite ways to enjoy the summer in Boston!

Written by Anika Agarwal, MSIM '24

As a Tufts student, there's nothing better than enjoying Boston in the summer! There’s something about the fresh smell of pollen in the air after a long cold winter that is exactly what I need to shake off the cold weather blues and fall in love with the city of Boston all over again. The city comes alive with vibrant events, outdoor activities, and picturesque scenery that create the perfect backdrop for unwinding after the school year is over. Whether you're looking for something chill and relaxing to do during the week, or something fun and exciting to occupy your weekend, here are my top 10 activities to do in the summer in Boston!

  1. Picnic/Kayaking on the Esplanade

Nothing beats enjoying a sunny afternoon taking in the stunning views of the Charles River while enjoying the warm summer breeze. If you’re looking for something more active, you can rent a kayak from Community Boating and experience the Charles River up close. Once you’re sufficiently tired, set up a picnic blanket on the Esplanade and enjoy the sunset views!

  1. Felipes Rooftop

For a vibrant and lively evening, head to Felipe's Rooftop in Harvard Square. Sip on refreshing margaritas or sangria and savor delicious Mexican food while enjoying panoramic views of the city as the sun sets.

  1. Bike along the Charles

Biking along the Charles River is a quintessential Boston summer activity. The scenic path offers breathtaking views of the water, lush greenery, and the city skyline, making it a perfect way to stay active and enjoy the outdoors. You can bike on either the Cambridge side or Boston side of the river, depending on which view you’d rather get!

  1. Coffee in Beacon Hill

Start your day with a leisurely coffee in Beacon Hill, one of Boston’s most charming neighborhoods. Stroll along the cobblestone streets, admire the historic brownstones, and relax in a cozy café as you watch the world go by. Beacon Hill Books & Cafe is one of the cutest spots, with 3 floors to peruse and a cozy cafe perfect for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.

  1. Watch a Celtics Game at The Greatest Bar

Catch the excitement of a live Celtics game at The Greatest Bar. This sports bar has a lively atmosphere, and is the perfect place to cheer on your favorite team and experience Boston’s sports culture. Arguably even better than being inside the TD Garden itself!

The Boston Public Garden is a serene oasis in the heart of the city. Wander through the meticulously maintained gardens, take a ride on the famous swan boats, and enjoy the tranquility of the Gardens.

  1. Boston Public Library

Escape the summer heat by exploring the Boston Public Library. An architectural masterpiece in the heart of the city, BPL is much more than just a library. There are daily art and architecture tours to take advantage of, as well as quiet reading rooms and of course many notable works of art and literature. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and indulge in some literary bliss.

  1. Visit the New England Aquarium

Dive into the wonders of marine life at the New England Aquarium. From mesmerizing jellyfish displays to playful penguins, the aquarium has a wide variety of marine life. With its waterfront location, you can also enjoy beautiful harbor views and explore nearby attractions, making it a perfect day out in Boston.

  1. Catch a Red Sox Game at Fenway Park

Experience the thrill of America’s favorite pastime by catching a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Enjoy a hot dog, some cold beer and the iconic singing of “Sweet Caroline” in the middle of the eighth inning. The historic stadium, passionate fans, and the electric atmosphere make for an unforgettable summer evening.
